Exciting changes are underway at McCook Central! This summer, the district is moving forward with a new, modern playground that will be safer, more accessible, and ready for our students by the first day of school in August. The new playground will feature a zero-entry rubber surface, making it fully ADA-compliant and inclusive for all students.
This project, carefully planned and budgeted, is a result of thoughtful coordination with the City of Salem's bike trail expansion along Minnesota Street. As part of the city's improvements, a section of the existing playground fence, currently located on an easement, will be relocated 7 feet west, necessitating adjustments to the current layout. Rather than simply replacing what was lost, we saw this as an opportunity to upgrade and enhance the space for both our students and the broader community.
The updated playground reflects several recommendations identified during the district-wide Facility Assessment conducted by ISG this past year. This assessment, combined with substantial community input through our Facility Needs Survey, helped us prioritize long-term projects that align with community expectations and student needs.
We're proud to share that this work is being funded through capital outlay dollars, not through any increase in local taxes. McCook Central does not levy capital outlay at the maximum allowable rate, and we have not requested additional funding from taxpayers during my five years as superintendent. This progress is possible thanks to the school board's strong fiscal leadership and long-range planning, including the use of a responsibly maintained fund balance, which we plan to replenish after this summer's investments.
In addition to the playground, we are also collaborating with the City of Salem on improvements to the community center and Gene Danielsen Field parking area. These projects reflect our shared commitment to improving the quality of life and shared spaces for students and residents alike.
We understand that families care deeply about how school funds are utilized, and we do, too. Our board has consistently prioritized transparency and community engagement, ensuring that your voice helps shape our decisions. While we agree that this is not the right time for a large-scale building project or opt-out, we are taking a responsible, phased approach to ensure our facilities remain safe, modern, and well-maintained.
We're excited about the transformation taking place and proud to provide spaces where children can learn, play, and grow. Thank you to everyone who has supported our district by providing feedback, attending meetings, or simply trusting us to care for the needs of our students.
Work on the playground is progressing quickly. The equipment has arrived, and American Fence will remove the current fence around the playground. Excavation will begin soon, and playground construction will follow shortly after August 1st. Either way, we are on track to welcome students back to a refreshed and exciting play space this fall.
We appreciate your patience during construction and your continued support of McCook Central. If you have any questions about this project or any other district initiatives, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
